Losing Your Hair For A Good Cause
Butterfield's Student Council fund-raiser, "Leukemia Fighters," has brought in more than $1,000 so far. The fund-raiser ends at the end of the month.

Over the past weekend, one group of students raised more than $300 through a bake sale so physical education teacher Pat Krech rewarded the action by allowing students to shave his head Tuesday morning.

"In honor of these students and those fighting Leukemia," Krech said before going under the razor.

When A Peregrine Falcon Came To Visit
Rockland fifth-graders and students in Mrs. Sundh's classroom were visited by Alwin, a 4-year Peregrine falcon.

Craig Hendee from the International Heritage Conservancy brought in the falcon as part of a Partners for Excellence in Education mini-grant awarded to Sundh and Learning Center Director Becky Johnson. "Raptors Helping Raptors" has Sundh's students building birdhouses for falcons to be installed in the area. Fifth-graders also were allowed to hold the falcon and learned about its habitat.

Children's book author Carolyn Crimi spent some time Thursday morning with Copeland Manor second-graders, offering them writing tips.

She encouraged students to use a "thinking hat" when considering story ideas, keep an idea box to draw from, be prepared to write as many as 12 story drafts, and be prepared to deal with rejection letters, which she called "courage badges."
