Built in 1957, Copeland Manor School is a neighborhood school located at 801 South Seventh Avenue in Libertyville, Illinois. Three separate additions have expanded Copeland to the present size, including a Learning Center that was built in 1997 and a cafeteria that was built in 2009. Copeland Manor School has 400 students that are divided into three classrooms for each grade, from kindergarten through fifth grade. Parents have described Copeland as an academic focused neighborhood school that nurtures students while challenging and differentiating learning.
Copeland parents are actively involved in educating their child and other Copeland students. The Copeland Family Association (CFA) organizes events that benefit students like assemblies, Exploration Day, and Art Fest. Families also benefit from initiatives like school supply packs, Copeland Directory, Kick Off Dinner, Pancake breakfast/Holiday Shop, Luau, Fun Fair and gift wrap fundraiser. Parents also have opportunities to volunteer in classrooms to assist with academics, teach Famous Artist presentations and Kids and Chemistry lessons, and chaperone field trips.
Copeland's School Improvement Plans have typically focused on math and reading. The two goals for 2011-2013 focus on 1) Maximizing student engagement and learning opportunities by utilizing a continuum of technology resources that promote 21st century learning and align with the Common Core Standards and 2) Effectively establishing and sharing common ways to provide opportunities for students to demonstrate their knowledge extends beyond standards via challenging opportunities and activities that foster self-directed learning and collaboration.
Formal and informal assessments in Copeland classrooms guide instruction and learning and provide feedback to students, teachers, and parents. One assessment that Illinois schools use to compare achievement of students is the Illinois Standards Achievement Test (ISAT). Based on 90% or more of Copeland's students meeting or exceeding state expectations on math and reading on the ISAT, Copeland Manor School has been identified as an "Academic School of Excellence" since 2006. 100% of the current fourth and fifth grade student met or exceeded state expectations for last year's math tests for ISAT.
Copeland's school colors are blue and yellow and the mascot is "Cougie" the Cougar. Along with the engaging day-to-day classroom activities, Copeland students also have opportunities to participate in band or orchestra (4th and 5th grade); the Variety Show; Family Math and Science Nights; after school foreign language; intramural volleyball, basketball, floor hockey, and cheerleading (4th and 5th grade); Girls On The Run (3rd through 5th grade); Chorus Club; and Sign Language Club.
