Partners for Excellence in Education - Superintendent's

Thirty-three area businesses are supporting District 70 students as members of Partners for Excellence in Education. Members of the business group offer their time and financial donations to the school district. Partners funds a "Mini-Grant Awards" program, now in its18th year, which has awarded almost $100,000 over the years for direct use in the classrooms. Teachers create innovative programs and apply for the mini-grants. Recently Supt. Dr. Guy Schumacher, far left, and Board of Education President Maryann Ovassapian, far right, visited business partners to give them plaques of appreciation. Here, Supt. Schumacher and Mrs. Ovassapian visit with Guido Oliverii, owner of Ristorante Bottaio in Libertyville, and thank him for his contributions to the schools.

D70 Administrators Continue To Review Safety - Superintendent's

In a District 70 administrative meeting today, Supt. Dr. Guy Schumacher reviewed current plans and procedures set to address safety and greater security in all schools. Libertyville Police Chief Clint Herdegen collaborated with the administrators and the D70 Emergency Management Committee to support and guide plans that enhance and address the safety of children and staff. Jan Wagner, Jill Leffelman and Donna Brannstrom are preparing to retire this spring and bid farewell to Copeland Manor School. The three turned the tables on tradition recently when they hosted a luncheon for their coworkers to say thank you for all the wonderful years they spent together.

Prin. Hallmark Featured on National Blog - Superintendent's

Principal Jon Hallmark talks about how he helps motivate almost 1,000 students at Highland Middle School on a <a href="http://mawiasgedom.com/class-act-interview-with-jon-hallmark/#.UYqghmTSPDV">national blog</a> by motivational speaker and author Mawi Asgedom. Hallmark uses character building aspects in every day learning and has the entire school raising money to build a piggery in Uganda. One of his key phrases is "harness their energy." Hallmark is pictured here with Mawi, who talked to the entire school in March.

D70 Schools Receive Academic Excellence Awards - Superintendent's

For the fourth consecutive year, Adler Park, Butterfield, Copeland Manor, and Rockland schools are being honored with the highest academic award given by the Illinois State Board of Education for providing students with a high quality education. The four elementary schools in Libertyville Elementary District 70 received the highest award, an "Academic Excellence Award." They were included with only 454 schools in the state to receive the award. In order to qualify for the award, those 454 schools showed they could sustain high student performance over at least three years. The award was given to schools where at least 90% of students met or exceeded state standards in 2010-2012.

Last Day of School Is June 4 - Superintendent's

The last day of school for the 2012-13 school year will be June 4. Full-day kindergartners through fifth-graders will be dismissed at 1:15 p.m. Half-day kindergartners' last day will be June 3. Highland Middle School students, grades 6-8, will be dismissed at 1:45 p.m.

Judge Fusz Talks About the Law to HMS Students - Superintendent's

Lake County Circuit Court Associate Judge Michael J. Fusz, currently assigned to the law division, spoke to Highland Middle School students on May 7 to explain how the legal system works. The Hon. Fusz currently works on civil cases when assigned.

New Board Members Take Office - Superintendent's

During a special board meeting on May 6, Board of Education President Maryann Ovassapian swore in four members to the District 70 Board. Taking the oath for the first time were Wendy Schilling and Luke Stowe, while voters returned incumbents Julie Damenti and Tom Vickers to elected service.

Congratulations to Rockland School Principal Jeff Knapp for being named Elementary School Principal of the Year of the Lake Region by the Illinois Principal Association. It is the first time the IPA has honored Mr. Knapp as Principal of the Year. He also has been awarded Assistant Principal of the Year, and been honored twice for dedicated service from the IPA. Please join us in congratulating Mr. Knapp.

Advocate Condell Art Gallery Features New Art - Superintendent's

New artwork from District 70 students is on display at the Advocate Condell Medical Center art gallery in the lobby. The hospital and school district partnered last year to display the artwork, which is rotated at the end of every trimester. District 70 student artwork also appears in art shows at Libertyville High School and in a communitywide artshow, called arteffects, to be held at Cook Park Public Library.

For many years, Maria Jimenez has been making a homemade Cinco de Mayo meal for the Copeland Manor School staff. Staff actually buys into the meal. This year, more than $600 generated from the delicious lunch will be donated to the American Cancer Society. For all you do, Maria, thank you!

2013 Award of Character Recipient Casie DeRose - Superintendent's

D70's Award of Character was presented Friday to Speech Pathologist Casie DeRose, who was honored for initiating many service projects with teachers over the years. While now stationed at Butterfield School, Casie also has worked at other D70 schools and brings teachers throughout the district together to work on projects. She has initiated a blood drive, clothing drive, donations for Bernie's Book Bank and packed meals for Feed My Starving Children Foundation. A kind and selfless teacher, DeRose is a dedicated colleague and guide to parents. "Always an advocate for children and always there to lend support and offer contributions for so many, Casie DeRose, Speech Language Pathologist, is tremendously deserving of this recognition and honor," said Supt. Dr. Guy Schumacher. Casie, who was nominated and selected by staff, was honored during a Teacher Institute Day in front of her peers and family. Wellness Reminder - Finance & Operations

Just a reminder that all wellness bills for fiscal year 2012-2013 must be received at the District 70 Business Office by noon on Tuesday, June 4, 2013 (no exceptions!). All bills turned in must be dated between June 6, 2012 and June 4, 2013 and Proof of payment, showing month, day, year and amount paid (i.e. cancelled check, credit card bill, cash receipt) must be submitted in order to receive reimbursement. Any bills dated or submitted after June 4, 2013 will be applied toward the 2013-2014 fiscal year.
